Sandals Foundation & Great Shape! Inc. Partner For 1000 Smiles Project

The Sandals Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts International, has partnered with Great Shape! Inc., a US-based non-profit organization, to kick off this year’s 1000 Smiles project.  Beginning last week, individuals in Hanover and Westmoreland, Jamaica received dental care because of this project.  The dental clinics will continue to operate in additional surrounding areas from August 31-September 4 as well as September 7-11 and will be open Monday through Friday between 9 am and 4:30 pm.

“The Sandals Foundation is proud to have joined forces with Great Shape! Inc. and work with this team of dedicated individuals to impact so many lives throughout the years with the 1000 Smiles project,” stated Heidi Clarke, director of programs for the Sandals Foundation.

Interested participants may visit the clinics to sign up and benefit from the various services including, fillings, sealants, cleanings and extractions.  The 1000 Smiles Dental Project is a 12 year-old partnership between the Sandals Foundation and Great Shape! Inc. The partnership facilitates the provision of dental services in temporary clinics and oral hygiene workshops in schools, and so far has seen over 150,000 people accessing these services from communities in Hanover and Westmoreland as well as St. Ann, St. Mary, St. James and Trelawny.

This year, over 1,500 people alone will benefit from the services provided at the clinics in Hanover and Westmoreland.  Following the Hanover and Westmoreland leg, the team will provide services to people in St. Ann and Whitehouse.  The Ministry of Health and the University of Technology are also partners of the program and have provided technical expertise and other areas of support.  Approximately 400 people from North America and Jamaica will form this year’s team of volunteers under the 1000 Smiles project.

The Sandals Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was created to continue and to expand upon the philanthropic work that Sandals Resorts International has undertaken.  It is the culmination of three decades of dedication to playing a meaningful role in the lives of the communities where we operate across the Caribbean. The Sandals Foundation funds projects in three core areas: education, community and the environment.   One hundred percent of the monies contributed by the general public to the Sandals Foundation go directly to programs benefiting the Caribbean community.
